All save one of the top eight
seeds advanced to the
quarterfinals round.
Seventh-seeded DeQuan Jackson of
East Ascension found North
Vermillion's Colin Laird a
little too tough, succumbing to
the Patriot by a 9-6 score. |

Saturday Matches - February 1st |

The top four seeds advanced to
the semifinals, but none of them
easily. Top seeded Mason
Williams had the "easiest"
quarterfinals match, defeating
Comeaux's Jacque Girouard 5-1.
Second-seeded Jack Fontenot of
John Ehret had the next
"easiest" time in knocking off
returning Division III state
champion Marshall Hill of
Parkview Baptist 8-4.
Fourth seed Trey Duhon of
Sulphur had a 2-0 lead when
Benton's returning Division II
state champion Andre Dean was
disqualified (in this match
only), and #3 Ashton Queyrouze
of Jesuit needed a "Sudden
Victory" period to get past
Laird. |

Saturday Semifinals #
1 |
#1 Mason Williams
(Brother Martin) over #4 Trey
Duhon (Sulphur) 3-1 (prior to
Sulphur disqualification) |
|
|
Duhon did not start
his season until the Louisiana Classic in
which he beat East Ascension's DeQuan
Jackson and Parkview Baptist's Marshall
Hill. But he lost to Laird of North
Vermillion, which makes one wonder why, only
with a 3-3 record, he was seeded over Laird.
No matter - this was a match against
the #1 seed of the tournament, who was 21-3.
The first period ended 1-0 in Duhon's
favor after Williams was called for a
technical violation. Duhon escaped in the second period and
the two went out of bounds on their feet.
Williams, however, did not hear a whistle
and even though Duhon was walking toward
his coaches as if mildly injured, Mason
pounded on him from behind to score two
takedown points and a 2-1 lead.
[Initially the editor reported a whistle
had not blown, and that Mason's takedown was
justified. Video evidence indicates a
whistle did blow and that Williams simply
did not hear it and did not notice an
official call for a stoppage of action.
The editor is not certain the takedown by
Williams was not disallowed - he may have
taken down Duhon later in the period to get
the 2-1 lead.]
In the third period
Williams escaped to take a 3-1 lead, and he
followed that with a forced single-leg
takedown leading to a 5-1 lead. After
a break and with only a mere one second
remaining on the clock, Duhon, from the
bottom position, elbowed Williams in the
face as the Crusader assumed the top
position. With one second left in the
match Duhon managed to get disqualified from
the tournament, costing Sulphur all of the
team points he had already scored as well as
any he might have scored in the consolation
rounds. |

Queyrouze has had
an "up and down" 26-15 season, and has been
filling the vacancy left by Efosa Eboigbe at
152 lbs. But Fontenot proved to be too
strong. With four seconds remaining in
the first period Fontenot recorded a
takedown for a 2-0 lead. Fontenot then
scored a reversal in the first minute of the
second period. Queyrouze scored a
reversal in the third period, but Fontenot
was able to stand up and turn into
Queyrouze, grabbing a single leg and taking
the Blue Jay down to the mat for a final
reversal. Fontenot advanced to the
finals with a 6-2 win. |

Williams brought a
26-3 record to the Ken Cole, his only losses
coming from Jesuit's Efosa Eboigbe (no
longer an issue, it seems) and Alabama's
Morgan Paugh, both at the Trey Culotta.
He won championships at the Spartan Open,
the Griffin Open and at Soddy Daisy, TN.
Fontenot was 31-2 entering the Ken Cole.
He had losses to Catholic's Matthew Mire and
East Ascension's Dequan Jackson (he avenged
that one later) and championships at the
Greater New Orleans and Jefferson
Invitational tournaments. He placed
second at the Louisiana Classic to Mire 5-3.
Fontenot received a little gift in the first
10 seconds of the match via a penalty
assessed to Williams. The 1-0 lead
would last into the third period. With
a minute remaining Williams tied the score
at 1-1 with an escape. Fontenot surged
into the lead again when he forced a
single-leg lift down for a takedown and a
3-1 lead. But Williams quickly escaped
again and grabbing a single leg at
Fontenot's hip, fought past a whizzer to
slip behind for the winning takedown in a
4-3 match. |

Consolation Rounds
|
Brusly's Koby Mancuso found
himself to be the benefactor of
Duhon's tournament
disqualification. Mancuso,
after a Round of 16 6-1 loss to
Benton's Dean, defeated Nicholas
Nugent of Holy Cross in 2:32,
Avery Jones of Bossier 10-2 and
squeaked past Laird 8-7.
Next he faced Lafayette's Damian
Lasseigne, who he also barely
got past 6-5. The young
man was due for a break and got
it when he received Duhon's
forfeit in the consolation
semifinals. There he met
the #3 seed Queyrouze, a 3-1
"SV" winner over defending
Division II state champion
Lehrue Stevens, IV.
Mancuso had another close match
but prevailed 3-2 to garner
third place honors.
Stevens placed fifth
automatically due to Duhon's
disqualification.
